Today, during the first period, Year 7 AG1 class went to the science lab to conduct an experiment on different methods of separating mixtures. The mixture we worked with contained sand, iron fillings, and salt. The methods of separation we used were magnetism, filtration, and evaporation. First we extracted the iron fillings from the mixture using a magnet. Next, we filtered the mixture using a funnel and filter paper to separate the sand from the saltwater solution. Finally, we poured the filtered saltwater into an evaporating dish and heated it with a Bunsen burner to allow the water to evaporate, leaving the salt behind. Throughout the lesson, my group members and I were able to discuss our opinions logically and critically throughout the experiment. I found the process enjoyable and interesting, this activity helped us gain a better understanding of the different methods of separating mixtures.
