This term, Year 8 students have been diving into the world of dystopian literature as part of a unit designed to develop their critical thinking and essay writing skills. Through the study of key themes, characters, settings, and plots, students are learning how authors use dystopian stories to comment on real-world issues and provoke reflection on the human experience.
The unit centers around the driving question: How does dystopian literature open our eyes to the human experience? To explore this, students have examined how composers convey meaning and raise important questions through imaginative storytelling.
To deepen their understanding of the genre, students were challenged to create their own dystopian board games—complete with high-stakes scenarios, creative world-building, and survival strategies. The results were inventive, engaging, and full of critical insight. The unit culminated in a combined class session where students played and reflected on each other’s games.
