Did you know that the famous Greek mathematician, Archimedes, estimated that you would need 8×1063 grains of sand to fill the universe? That’s a lot of sand! But he didn’t just make a wild guess – he used an estimation strategy. In Year 7 Maths class, the students have been using this strategy of using a smaller known quantity to estimate a larger unknown quantity. Part of their assessment involves a common Australian carnival game – Guess the Lollies in the Jar. This skill of estimation is useful in real life as well for when you need to make quick decisions about quantities. Students can round numbers to an appropriate number of significant figures, use approximate values and make reasonable estimations to quickly and accurately make decisions about quantities.
