In Year 10 English, we’ve been diving into The History of English — an exciting journey that explores how the English language has evolved over time. From Old English and the influence of Viking and Norman invasions to the impact of colonization, globalization, and technology, students are discovering that English is not a static system but a living, changing language shaped by culture and history.
We’ve been using a mix of activities to bring this topic to life: annotating historical texts, investigating how technology has changed English, and even memorizing and performing Old English poetry. Students have also worked in groups to decode Middle English passages, using context clues to uncover meaning.
Through this unit, students are not only learning about language but also practicing critical thinking, collaboration, and research skills — key 21st-century competencies that prepare them to engage thoughtfully with the world around them.
