Kanna Matsuo, a first-year junior high school student, received the 26th Volunteer Spirit Award and the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Award in the junior high school category. During the Zoom morning assembly, she shared her activities aimed at protecting animals and supporting homeless people, which she had been participating in since her primary school years.
Similarly, Sayaka Mitani, a first-year high school student, developed an interest in environmental issues through her seminar research and created accessories using microplastics she collected from the sea in Kamakura. She then sold these accessories to raise awareness about the issue.
Other students who were interested in participating in the volunteer week were given a lecture by a representative from the NPO – Free the Children Japan. They also had a workshop on the theme “Think of an action you would like to take” where they considered ways to make a difference using their interests and strengths while having fun.
