This term, Year 7 AG English will put their creativity to the test by writing their own 10,000-word novels! However, in order to fully utilize their creative potential, students will need to first identify and silence their Inner Editors. These are the limiting beliefs that stifle creativity, telling writers “this idea is boring” or “nobody cares about this.”
For this lesson, AG2 students visualized and illustrated their Inner Editors. Additionally, students brainstormed practical actions for when these negative thoughts take hold. Examples included taking short breaks and reminding themselves that they are improving little by little. Now, students will lock their editors away. There will come a time when the outer editors take over to refine the novels, but now the focus should be on getting all ideas, the good and the bad, on paper first. These future authors have a long road ahead, but they are off to a great start.
