This summer, I had the opportunity to attend the Exeter Humanities Institute (EHI), an immersive training program in the Harkness method—an approach to learning that emphasizes student-led discussion, collaboration, and deep thinking. Over five days, I joined international educators from around the world to experience Harkness firsthand: practicing facilitation, analyzing student dialogue, and exploring how to adapt the method to different classrooms.
One of the many highlights was connecting with educators who shared fantastic strategies for using Harkness in a wide variety of school settings. I have returned to Tokyo inspired with fresh ideas for making student voices central to our learning.
