This term in Maths the Year 8 AG students have learned about graphing linear equations and simultaneous equations. As part of a project-based learning experience, the students applied this knowledge to a real-life situation – running a profitable business. The students investigated several options for a food stall business, determining the production costs and sale costs of their items to find the break-even point. Although we couldn’t run food stalls at school for real, students ran a simulation, making miniature items of their chosen food or drink and selling them to “customers” using play money. They then calculated their earnings to see if their business was a success and how closely their mathematical models were to a real situation. Not only was the sale event a lot of fun, but students could see how maths can be applied in the real world.
