In Year 9 English, students are currently studying The Giver by Lois Lowry. Through the novel, they are exploring important questions about society, community, and what it means to be a responsible member of both.

As part of the unit, students are analysing the values and structure of the Community before designing and evaluating their own ideal societies. They are discussing how societies can balance freedom, safety, equality, and individual responsibility, while considering how communities can be improved for the benefit of all.

The unit provides opportunities for students to develop discussion and presentation skills, helping them to communicate ideas clearly, listen respectfully to others, and confidently share their perspectives. These skills are essential for future study, careers, and active participation in society. The learning also reflects the Salesian vision of forming young people who are thoughtful, compassionate, and committed to making a positive contribution to their communities.
